That structure is why illustrated horror outperforms live-action horror at this length. An illustration can imply the thing in the doorway. A camera has to show it, and the moment it is shown it stops being frightening.

What the format actually looks like

  • Length: 30 to 60 secondsDread does not survive a long runway. Under a minute you can hold one location and one threat; past that the viewer has time to guess the ending, and a guessed ending is a dead one.
  • The reveal belongs at about 80% of the runtimeEverything before it is normal with one thing slightly off. Put the reveal too early and the rest is anticlimax; put it in the last second and it reads as a cut-off. On a 60-second video, aim for the reveal around second 48.
  • Silence is a sceneThe strongest beat in a horror short is usually the one with nothing happening. Give it its own scene with a short line, or none at all, and let the ambient bed carry it. In the editor you can lengthen how long that scene holds relative to the others.
  • Do not show the monsterThe recurring mistake in AI horror is spending the whole prompt describing the creature. The scenes then illustrate it in full, and the video becomes a monster showcase instead of a story. Describe the room, describe the behaviour, and let the thing stay at the edge of the frame.

What makes an AI horror short actually work?

Withholding. The structure that works is normal → one detail wrong → pause → reveal, with the reveal at roughly four fifths of the runtime. What does not work is a description of a monster, because the image generator will happily show it to you and the tension dies on the spot.

Can I make a horror series with recurring episodes?
